At this day and age everyone has a smart phone that has a camera. You can practice taking pictures with it but it's not just taking pictures, it's about framing, exposing your image correctly and then editing. Most these days just snap the picture and then skip the editing stage. First things first is what are you taking a picture of. If it's a single person you should hold your camera or phone vertically as that's how you create a portrait. I've seen some hold their camera horizontally and that's more for a landscape image.
Here are two great examples. If I took the first image horizontally, I'd cut off the words think and if I took the second image vertically, you wouldn't be able to see the beautiful sunset. Notice in image two I positioned my couple off to the left. This is something I would encourage you to do as in this image it leads the viewers eye from the bouquet of flowers up to the couple kissing and finally to the beautiful sunset. I don't do this for all my images. Sometimes I leave my couples in the middle of the image like this one.
The reason why I centered this couple is because I used the tree on the left as the object I wanted on the left that leads down to my couple kissing. I also saw the beautiful scenery behind them which I didn't need to reposition them in my camera as they were below the scenery. The tree on the left also made like a little arbor for them that felt as though they were kissing under.
After you take your photos, you should use an editing program. I use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to edit all my photos. I also use Photomatix for all of my HDR work combined with Photoshop. A great editing program for your iPhone is Camera+. It's a very cheap program but is awesome for editing your photos taken with your phone. You can also use Apple's editing program as well but I highly recommend Camera+ as I've been using it for years now. After I edit my photos I upload them all to Zenfolio which is cloud based storage that cost about $150 a year for unlimited photos. You can also use Google Photos or iPhones iCloud. If you're looking to print out your photos I recommend mpix.com or if you want your photos fast, CVS or Walgreens. The quality won't be as good as mpix but for something quick, it does the job.
