Being released tomorrow July 21st 2023 is The Barbie Movie. I just went to a 6:30pm showing of it. While I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. There are a ton of enjoyable scenes where I really did laugh out loud, this movie tries too hard to be a serious film when it’s based off of a doll. It does give a great message but as a man, it seems to be really going after them and put them in the dumb role which media has done for ages i.e. The Simpsons and Family Guy. If you’re looking for a feel good romantic movie, this is not the film. If you’re looking for an woman empowering follow your dream, this might be the film for you. Now everyone has a dream to accomplish something in their lives to leave a lasting impression, I would hope. Even if that’s to be kind and nice to everyone we encounter to make their day better. Without giving much away, this movie pokes fun of the make believe world of Barbieland where everything is perfect for Barbie. When they introduce Ken, he is not confident, only when Barbie smiles or says hi to him. The next day things are slightly off for Barbie which sends her and Ken on an adventure to the real world to find out why. If you grew up with Barbie, you might love this film. Depending how you feel about Ken and men in general, you might love or hate this film. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are great together and are perfectly casted as Barbie and Ken. It was nice to see a cameo from Will Ferrell as the President of Mattel. Again, this movie is enjoyment for a lot of scenes until about 75% in when it becomes a battle between The Barbies and Ken to be one way or the other. Also, they say Barbie about 400 times in the first 10 minutes of this film. This might be a ploy for nostalgia to get grown adults to buy themselves or their kids a Barbie or further more The Barbie Dream House they never got as a kid. I give this film 4 Barbie Dream Houses out of 5.
