Every year I travel down to Orlando Florida to capture firework images at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. I use my Canon 5D Mark 3 equipped with my Canon 24-70 II.
To take these type of images you'll need:
Digital SLR Camera - Any brand
A medium or wide angle lens
A tripod
A shutter release
I set up my tripod and attach my camera to it a few minutes before the fireworks begin. Usually the spot I select is right before the bridge at Magic Kingdom near the Ice Cream Parlor. You can move further up Main Street if you'd like to get some of the buildings in your shot.
I attach my shutter release to my camera which allows me to keep the shutter open as long as I'd like. By doing this I can enjoy the fireworks as well as close my shutter when I feel like I've captured a fair amount of fireworks in my image. Also, with the shutter release I'm not touching my cameras shutter which would make the image blurry by a simple press of it. Make sure your camera is set to Bulb or B. My ISO is set to 100 and shutter speed is anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds depending on how many fireworks are appearing. As Disney shoots fireworks up faster my shutter becomes quicker and quicker as I don't want to overexpose the image. I put my f stop around f/11 as I want everything to be sharp.
Lastly I shoot in RAW so I can adjust the image later in lightroom if it's too dark or bright. If you have any questions about firework photography, be sure to contact me here.
